It was a Tuesday, or maybe a Wednesday. The days all run together when you're doing the same sort of thing over and over. A small county public defender sees kid burglaries, domestic assaults (that are usually resolved when the parties kiss and make-up), the occasional drunk driver and other miscellaneous crimes. The police normally have the confession, evidence and eye-witnesses lined up before I can even talk to my client. It's not a bad life, just very routine. But when an actual murder comes in, not that is something that lawyers live for. Some real Perry Mason stuff could be in the offing. When I got the call that I had been assigned to one, life in my little office perked up a bit. But I soon imagined that I would probably walk down to some family dispute that got out of hand and would be faced with the mountain of evidence that always seemed to be staring me in the face.
